Olympic berths on line for U.S. skaters
Elite begin battle for spots on the American team By Jenifer K. Nii Deseret News staff writer <<The latter is the foundation of American skating in the 1990s, having won national championships in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1997 and 1998. Eldredge is beloved in a way few skaters are, with luscious spins and solid jumps. But, there are jumps, and then there are quad jumps. The quad has eluded Eldredge for much of this season and likely will be one of the few things to separate him from a sixth national title. >> Well, Todd has managed in less than two months to equal the number of quad jumps landed in competition and took Weiss two seasons to do that. |

Figure Skating In Boston, Skaters Have to Shape Up or Ship Out By Rachel Alexander Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, January 14, 2001; Page D03 www.washingtonpost.com/wp...Jan13.html <<Once again, the Fairfax native will face competition from teenager Tim Goebel, who placed second last year. Five-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge is also returning to the competition for the first time in three years, and local favorites Delmore and Scott Smith of Sandy Spring will also be competing. >> |

U.S. Skaters Begin Quest for 2002 Gold
Sunday, January 14, 2001 KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS SERVICE www.sltrib.com/01142001/sports/62366.htm <<As for the men, Todd Eldredge, who sat out a while after failing to medal in Nagano, Japan, is back at age 29 to seek his sixth national title. He has come back with a quad in his repertoire -- the men can't win without one now -- but isn't able to hit it consistently. Defending national champion Michael Weiss is still coming back from a broken ankle, which usually doesn't help the quad. He would be a long shot to repeat. >> |

Skater Weiss Ready for Nationals NANCY ARMOUR, AP Sports Writer dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/...ing_1.html <<``Timmy and Todd have had good years,'' he said. ``I know they're definitely coming in here to skate well at this event. Every year is like that. Every year at national championships is like a big showdown, and this year is no different.'' >> <<``The last two years, in U.S. men's figure skating, I've kind of been it,'' Weiss said. ``It's going to be more of a question of, `Can Todd come back and perform at this level again? Has Tim worked enough on his artistry to be rewarded?'>> |

Buttoning up FleetCenter skate contest
Play by Play/by Jim Baker Sunday, January 14, 2001 www.bostonherald.com/ente...142001.htm <<He expects another tight battle in the men's competition among Chatham-raised 1996 world champion Todd Eldredge, reigning national king Michael Weiss and runner-up Timothy Goebel. Watch out for Goebel, known as ``king of the quads'' for packing three such jumps into his long program. He left Carol Heiss Jenkins and is coached by Frank Carroll, who is Kwan's guiding light. While Eldredge is not as strong a jumper as Goebel, he offers a better presentation. Weiss, by contrast, fell on several jumps at the Cup of Russia.>> |

Spotlight turns toward ice
Nation's best converge at FleetCenter by Karen Guregian Boston Herald www.bostonherald.com/bost...1/p2s4.htm <<While the overall popularity of the sport isn't nearly as widespread or fanatical as it was at the time of the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding soap opera, the interest remains strong. It's 13 months until the Salt Lake City Olympics, so competitive skating will be drawing even more attention throughout the year. That said, having such stars as Michelle Kwan and Todd Eldredge roaming around the city and showing their artistry and jumps on the ice should provide a spark in an otherwise down winter sports period. >> <<"It's an exciting event because it's an important step to where you're going," Boitano said. "The national championships, the worlds, the Olympics - all of them create a skater's image and fame and helps set up their career afterward." It sets up their bank accounts in terms of future ice shows and endorsements. The 37-year-old Boitano is just glad he no longer needs one of those showy quad jumps in his repetoire. In the realm of skating, it's purely an amateur trick, one that's almost a given to succeed in the men's competition. That means you, Todd Eldredge, Michael Weiss and Tim Goebel. "I think it will be significant because I think the person who's going to place in the Olympics is going to have to do a quad," Boitano remarked. "I think you can still win the (national) championships without it. It depends on how everyone skates. It's not a necessity, per se, but to win the worlds, it is." >> Time to reap the rewards: Bay State pair strive for glory at championships by Michael O'Connor Monday, January 15, 2001 www.bostonherald.com/spor...152001.htm Kirk ready for big time: Jr. champ to take on best in U.S. by Michael O'Connor Monday, January 15, 2001 www.bostonherald.com/spor...152001.htm Inside Track Boston Herald www.bostonherald.com/news...152001.htm <<Health food on ice The folks at the Sheraton-Boston, one of three host hotels for the 2001 State Farm U. S. Figure Skating Championships, are so excited about their guests, they are practically doing loop jumps. Well, that may be an overstatement. But they have revamped their room service and restaurant menus to include more low-fat, high-protein foods. ``We know that this is a health-conscious bunch, so why not do it?'' said Sheraton spokesguy Steve Pellegrino. ``Anything to make their stay more enjoyable.'' They'll be jumping for joy. . . . Skirting the skating And speaking of the Championships, Olympic ice princess Nancy Kerrigan, will be skirting much of this week's skate-a-thon. But her peeps say it has nothing to do with bad karma. After all, it has been seven years since the Tonya Harding knee-clubbing nastiness at the nationals in Detroit. Some people do move on. . . . Word is, Nancy will don her blades for a shoot with ABC Sports this morning at the Frog Pond on Boston Common, and she may also tape commentary for Fox Sports New England before jumping to New Jersey tomorrow to perform in the ``Champions on Ice'' tour. Ailing Weiss eyes figure skating title; Kwan seeks her fifth
From News Services www2.startribune.com/stOn...y=83342871 <<Eldredge won five national championships -- his last in 1998 -- before a two-year retirement. Goebel, silver medalist last year, is looking for his first. In 1999, Goebel finished third behind Weiss and last year's bronze medalist, Trifun Zivanovic. "The three of us have completely contrasting personalities and skating careers," Weiss said. "Each has an advantage in a different area. Todd is a steady guy, a consistent performer. Timothy takes a lot of risks. I'm in the middle. I take risks when I need to. "The key to my execution is limiting my weaknesses. My strength is my artistry. My spins are fast. I point my toes. My artistry is very solid. The big questions are, can Todd come back and has Timothy worked enough on his artistry to be rewarded for it?" >> |

FIGURE SKATING NOTEBOOK
Another ex-star spilled By John Powers, Globe Staff, 1/16/2001 Boston Globe www.boston.com/dailyglobe...led+.shtml <<Since he'll be skating before both defending men's champion Michael Weiss and top challenger Tim Goebel, Todd Eldredge is unlikely to try a quadruple jump in Thursday night's short program. It's strictly a risk-vs.-reward issue. If Eldredge splatters the quad, which he's only landed once in competition, he could put himself out of contention immediately. ''All I have to do is be in the top three after the short to have a chance to win,'' says the five-time champ, who's making his return to Nationals after two years away. Eldredge drew 12th in the 19-man field, with Goebel 16th and Weiss 17th. Josh Figurido, of Gloucester and the Skating Club of Boston, will skate ninth ... >> |

Carruthers, Gannon follow Kwan's quest
by Jim Baker Boston Herald Tuesday, January 16, 2001 www.bostonherald.com/spor...162001.htm <<Gannon noted Eldredge, the five-time U.S. champion from Chatham, has been away from the nationals for two years - and Michael Weiss won both times. ``But Todd kept his eligibility and wants to win at the next Olympics,'' Gannon said. ``Yet Timothy Goebel is a talented jumper, the only one to do three quads in one program, and with three outstanding skaters, there are only two spots for U.S. men on the world team.'' Carruthers said: ``The key for Eldredge is he added a quad toe loop. He wasn't doing that in the 1998 Olympics, having just learned it last summer, and that's quite a feat for a skater at age 29.'' >> <<Kwan, who won the last three U.S. titles and is the reigning world champion, and Eldredge are two main draws in ABC/ESPN's three nights of telecasts, which will feature the introduction of ``Stro-Motion,'' cross-screen images of skaters jumping in slow-motion via a strobe camera. >> |

Skater Jahnke tests promise at nationals
January 16, 2001 BY JO-ANN BARNAS FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER www.freep.com/sports/othe...010116.htm <<Adding intrigue is the comeback of five-time U.S. men's champ Todd Eldredge of Lake Angelus, who has skipped the past two nationals. "He has a lot of great qualities," Eldredge said of Jahnke, who won the 1993 U.S. novice title at 13. "It's just the consistency level, and that comes with time. When you're younger and just coming up the ladder, you have to keep on proving yourself." >> |

Cohen is third to withdraw
By John Powers, Globe Staff, 1/18/2001 www.boston.com/dailyglobe...raw+.shtml <<Maybe, maybe not Todd Eldredge says he'll probably try a quadruple toe-double toe combination in the short program after all. ''It's a question of how I feel when they call my name and I step on the ice,'' said Eldredge, who's never landed the combo in competition. ''I'd like to do the quad in the short. If I do it, it puts a little pressure on the other guys to do it.'' Though Eldredge can probably place in the top three tonight and stay in title contention without the quad, he knows he's going to need it if he makes the team for the World Championships. ''The two guys who go from here will be facing guys [i.e. Russia's Alexei Yagudin and Evgeny Plushenko] who are already doing the quad. It's already become a necessity.'' Does Eldredge, who grew up in Chatham, have a home-ice advantage at the FleetCenter, which has never hosted a skating competition? Not really, he said. ''It's nice to have friends in the stands, but a rink is a rink,'' he said with a shrug. ''When we get out there, it's a sheet of ice. It could be anywhere in the world. You still have to go out there and do your job.'' >> Some pain, all gain To the competitors in this dangerous sport, it's helmets be damned By John Powers, Globe Staff, 1/18/2001 www.boston.com/dailyglobe...ain+.shtml <<A few years ago, Todd Eldredge tripped on a frozen chunk of ice during warmups for Skate America, threw his shoulder out of its socket, and writhed screaming on the ice. Then he went backstage, had the shoulder popped back in, and went out and won the title again. He could skate, so he skated. >> Goebel leaps into the fore By Barbara Huebner, Globe Staff, 1/18/2001 www.boston.com/dailyglobe...ore+.shtml Mentions Todd |
